Compound formed by replacing the hydrogen
atoms of a hydrocarbon with fluorine.
Fluorocarbons are used as inert coatings,
refrigerants, synthetic resins, and as
propellants in aerosols. There is concern
because their release into the atmosphere
depletes the ozone layer, allowing more
ultraviolet light from the Sun to penetrate
the Earth's atmosphere, increasing the
incidence of skin cancer.
